Spectacular Succulents

Normally when people think of wedding flowers, they usually imagine hydrangeas, roses, and baby’s breath. But with changing wedding styles and a sweeping trend towards eco-friendly weddings, succulents are becoming the go-to flower for everything from bouquets, to boutonnieres, to centerpieces, and even cake decoration. Here’s how you can incorporate this hardy flower into your wedding!

Bridal Bouquets

When styling succulents for bridal bouquets, combining them with more traditional flowers keeps the look soft and gentle. These succulents blended with coral and blush makes this bouquet trendy and modern but still classy. See more of this New York City wedding here. This look was created with flowers such as air plant, succulents, purple dahlias, burgundy scabiosa, scabiosa pods, and jasmine vine. Though this bouquet was specifically created with the desert in mind, it would look fantastic in a tropical setting as well. See the Urban Santa Fe Desert wedding here. Another option is focusing all the attention on the succulent. This bouquet works because the textures and colors of the succulent and its surrounding flowers balance each other out. It complements a lace wedding dress perfectly! Boutonnieres

When it comes to succulent boutonnieres, keep the colors and flowers simple. It’s easy to go overboard with too many elements tied together. Using few flowers for a boutonniere keeps it light and keeps your man looking sharp. Centerpieces and Decoration Spectacular Succulents- Using succulents in your wedding on earlyivy.wordpress.com This centerpiece is doing double duty: providing a green and trendy aesthetic to the reception tables and setting some romantic lighting with its candles. There’s no need for extra candles on the tables to keep things lit up after dark. Plus, since this centerpiece doesn’t look too ‘wedding-y’, it could be used around the home after the wedding or given to guests as favors. The combination of rustics and metals give a whimsical, almost fairy tale like ambiance. See the rest of this stunning wedding here. This theme could go horribly wrong in so many ways, but the creative minds behind this shoot brought it together exquisitely. The table feels modern with a twist of Jurassic from the colors of the succulents and mosses. With the right elements, the most wild ideas (pun intended) can look chic and pulled together. So if you didn’t invite any dinosaurs to your wedding but you still want a similar look, this could fit a rustic, retro, or Renaissance themed wedding. See this fun themed shoot here. Spectacular Succulents- Using succulents in your wedding on earlyivy.wordpress.com Since succulents come in a variety of colors, you may be able to match them with your wedding colors, like on this cake. The purples of the ribbon on the icing match well with the purple and green of the flowers. Succulents also work with any icing texture, from very textured like the cake above, to smooth fondant like this one. But if you’re really bold… Spectacular Succulents- Using succulents in your wedding on earlyivy.wordpress.com

Go with a naked cake! Naked cakes aren’t iced or covered in fondant so they may need some extra decoration. Fresh fruit and flowers are the perfect solution and both are featured on this cake. I must admit, this type of cake is not for everyone, but if you love it, be bold and go for it! Hands down, succulents are amazing and versatile flowers. They can be used in practically every element of your wedding, but there are some basic guidelines to keep them from overpowering any design. First, keep designs simple. Don’t crowd succulents together. They are eye-catching, and too many put together can ruin a design. If you are using large succulent flowers, keep surrounding flowers small and airy. Small succulents can be added to give an arrangement a pop of texture and color, but use them sparingly. Second, keep colors similar. With the variety of succulent colors available, this should be easy to do, but don’t add extra colors (like blues and purples) if they don’t coordinate with your wedding colors.
